Regulatory / Quality and Clinical talent again in hot pursuit in Q1

The first quarter of 2013 showed overall higher levels of demand for Life Sciences talent globally as the ZRG Index edged up to 82.8, an 8% increase over year end levels. New job opportunities increased broadly across Europe and the Americas, while the number of opportunities in the Asia Pacific region fell 23% in the quarter.

What’s Hot?

Europe, Middle East and Africa jumped 30% in the quarter

Job opportunities in Regulatory / Quality and Clinical were up substantially with an 80% increase in demand

Medical Device and Diagnostics sectors showed the biggest increase in demand with a 10% rise in opportunity/li>

What’s Not?

The APAC region cooled in Q1 with overall hiring decreasing by 23% in the quarter

Outsourcing and Services sector showed clear pessimism reflected in the level of hiring

Research and Development related jobs dropped across the globe

Regional Hiring Trends By Quarter

Companies have re-engaged efforts in a big way to fill open positions. Commenting on the change of direction, ZRG’s European President and Global Practice Head of Life Sciences Adam El Din related, “Our clients continue to have broad needs that seem to never catch up to the headcount in place. With a competitive market for talent and more demand than supply, the fight for talent continues across all levels with our client organizations.”

The year 2012 ended with two straight quarters of decline in the ZRG Partners Global Life Sciences hiring index, closing 2012 at a 76.5% level. While the index was essentially unchanged from Q4 2011, there were some interesting shifts in where new jobs are being sought and the job functions that are now in demand.

What’s Hot?

APAC Region was the driver of growth with a 17.8% increase in demand

Pfizer is flexing some hiring muscle as the Q4 leader in the region in open requisitions and new talent openings

Research & Development hiring globally was the largest category percentage gainer in new openings of any job function

What’s Not?

Regulatory / Quality and Clinical had an across the board drop globally

EMEA showed less hiring overall with a decrease of 9.1% in Q4

Sector wise, Medical Device and Diagnostics are trending down in demand

Looking at 2012 compared to 2011 several macro trends were clear. Hiring in the Pharma sector was up, but driven by specialized roles that were difficult to fill during the year. Broader skill sets in Sales and Marketing became less important and specialized skills in Quality, Regulatory and Clinical and APAC growth potential kept multinationals on the hunt for new talent. Medical Device and Diagnostics showed consistent reduced hiring demand in 2012. Surprisingly, demand for Manufacturing talent was on the rise, perhaps due to shifting locations for existing facilities for many, opening up new roles in regions with better cost structures and geo-political life sciences environments.

What will 2013 bring?

Global Life Sciences Hiring Demand Retreated 12.1% in Q3

After four straight quarters of moderate growth in hiring demand, the ZRG Global Life Sciences Hiring index posted a 12.1% decrease, ending the quarter at 77.2%. This appears to be a repeat of 2011 trends, when the second quarter numbers were the highest, followed by end of the year hiring austerity driving down new job opportunities in the third quarter.

Functions

Manufacturing talent is enjoying a renaissance of sorts in the life sciences area grabbing the top growth spot for sought after talent, surging 63% this quarter and compiling a strong and steady increase cumulatively over the past 2 quarters.

Abruptly reversing course with a 44% decrease, corporate office roles in IT/Finance and General areas stalled across sectors and regions, perhaps reflecting the broader hiring slowdown indicated in the overall GLSI index number. Looking inside the hiring slowdown in IT/Finance and General category, the America’s had the biggest drag on the global number with a 50% decrease. In real job numbers from our index companies, over 1500 less jobs were available in Q3 compared to Q2 in this function.

For Immediate Release
Global Life Sciences hiring demand increases 11.1% in Q2 2012.
Europe posts significant increase in hiring demand pulling up index figures

WEST ORANGE, N.J. August 1, 2012

Global hiring within the ZRG Life Sciences Index was up 11.1% from the first quarter, finishing at 87.8, the second highest level over the last 9 quarters. Demand for new employees in Europe drove the index up globally as EMEA reported a 34% increase in hiring levels overall. Medical device and diagnostics accounted for much of the growth, with over 1,300 new jobs sited in our index companies alone.

What’s Hot

Europe is hiring! The EMEA numbers are showing a new all-time high mark for total demand

Medical Device and Diagnostics is rebounding with a 22.8% increase in job opportunities around the world

Hiring for sales talent has returned with a 40% increase in sales talent opportunities within the index companies

Manufacturing roles jumped 100% in the quarter reflecting the trend of geographic shifts in where product is made around the world

What’s Not

Demand in Asia Pacific dropped by 11% in the quarter, perhaps reflecting a slowing growth rate

Quality, Regulatory and Clinical jobs dropped 16% from last quarter, although the total number of roles still remains robust

Research and Development Roles dipped 11%

Private Equity Investment in the sector is still off 50% from last year’s levels

While EMEA was the regional story, with a broad increase in hiring across medical device and pharma, one juggernaut is leading the charge. Novartis had a large increase in “job share” in this quarter’s index, with increased activities across all functions and regions in EMEA. Driving hiring in the medical device and diagnostics in EMEA was the big three led by Siemens, Philips and GE Medical. The America’s showed growth of 8% in new and open jobs in the quarter while APAC retreated 11.5%.

2011 Life Science hiring index posts 14.1% increase over last year with slight increase in Q4

Robust Private Equity Activity in Q4 could be significant factor in hiring in 2012

After a sizable drop in third quarter hiring, the ZRG Partners Global Life Science hiring index returned to growth, ending the year at a 76.11 mark. The year was a stable growth year in overall hiring with an average increase of 14% year over year. The second quarter this year, when the index shows a 17% increase, was the only period where hiring deviated from rather steady levels. However, this elevated level was short-lived as the end of the year numbers returned to a more stable figure.
