Global Life Sciences Hiring Demand Retreated 12.1% in Q3
European Malaise and Medical Device and Diagnostics sector drag index down
WEST ORANGE, N.J. November 8, 2012
After four straight quarters of moderate growth in hiring demand, the ZRG Global Life Sciences Hiring Index posted a 12.1% decrease, ending the quarter at 77.2%. This appears to be a repeat of 2011 trends with end of the year hiring austerity driving down new job opportunities in the third quarter.
What’s dragging down the index?
The EMEA region across all sectors and verticals showed a 29% slowdown in hiring demand
IT / Finance and General roles were way off in the quarter, dropping 44%
Medical Device and Diagnostics as a sector showed weakness with an 18% retreat
On the positive side, manufacturing jobs repeated a steep rise in the 2nd quarter; this time up 63%. This may reflect the near-term start-up or expansion of several large facilities around the world among the major players. Regulatory Affairs, Quality and Clinical roles continued to lead in a number of roles posted while R&D remained relatively flat under the shadow of some large layoff announcements.
All three index sectors were down for the quarter with Medical Device and Diagnostics posting ...
- Global hiring within the ZRG Life Sciences Index was up 11.1% from the first quarter, finishing at 87.8, the second highest level over the last 9 quarters. Demand for new employees in Europe drove the index up globally as EMEA reported a 34% increase in hiring levels overall.
